Football: Through the Lens: Week Five

27 September 2007

By Ralph Gaston

Clovis East v Bullard (2007)And then there were two.

Of all the Central Section teams that had an eye on representing in Carson at the State Championships in December, the Section’s best bets come down to two C-MAC teams: the Edison Tigers and the Bullard Knights. As of now Bullard is in the best position based on their undefeated record, highlighted by their dramatic 28-25 victory over the Golden Eagles last week. Edison had a similar opportunity two weeks ago, but the Sunnyside Stadium lights didn’t allow that game to finish (thanks, FUSD!). So the Tigers have a tie on their record, one that will no doubt be used against them when the state’s decision makers get together to decide who goes to Carson.

Of course, these two teams have lots more to prove before they’re even in position to think state title. Edison has a big matchup coming against Sanger, a team that always gives them trouble. Bullard has big-time rival Central this week. And the two teams face each other in October in a game that will likely have all kinds of playoff implications. Football in this section has centered around the TRAC for several years, but this season it seems the C-MAC is leading the way.

Oh, by the way…we haven’t talked much about Division II, but all I’ll say is this: don’t be suprised if we’re talking about a Central Section team going to Carson in this division, either. Right now my money’s on El Diamante.

More to come next week.
